Direct Marking in Industry

Directly mark products, packaging or components.

Direct marking refers to the direct application of text, numbers, codes, logos or other information onto a product, packaging or component. Unlike marking with separate labels, the information is applied directly to the surface of the respective material.

In industrial production, batch numbers, serial numbers, production data, best-before dates, barcodes, QR codes, logos and product information are examples of applications for direct marking. Modern industrial inkjet systems enable fast and flexible marking directly during the production process.

With its RED Jet TIJ printing systems, RED Jet offers a compact and economical solution for industrial direct marking. The systems can be used as stationary units in production lines or as mobile handheld printers. Depending on the application, cardboard, paper, plastic, metal, glass, wood and other surfaces can be marked directly.

What is direct marking?

With direct marking, the required information is printed directly onto the product or material to be marked. Depending on the technology, the marking process can be contact-based or contactless. Industrial TIJ systems (Thermal Inkjet) apply tiny ink droplets precisely to the surface.

The key difference compared with a labeling solution is that no separate label needs to be applied to the product. This can eliminate additional process steps and materials. At the same time, variable data can be applied directly during the production process.

Direct marking is particularly useful wherever products change frequently or individual information needs to be printed on each product or package.

Direct marking with TIJ technology

TIJ stands for Thermal Inkjet and refers to an inkjet technology in which ink is applied to the substrate contactlessly through a printhead. Modern TIJ systems provide high print quality and are suitable for a wide range of industrial marking applications.

RED Jet uses standardized Hewlett-Packard TIJ technology and offers stationary systems with different printhead configurations. Depending on the model, print heights of up to approximately 12.7 mm or 25.4 mm are possible. Multiple printheads can also be used for parallel or combined printing tasks.

Another advantage of TIJ direct marking is the ability to use variable print data. Serial numbers, batch numbers, dates and other individual information can be printed directly during production.

Direct marking on cardboard and packaging

Direct marking on cardboard and packaging is a particularly common industrial application. Cartons, shipping packages and corrugated cardboard can be marked with batch numbers, best-before dates, barcodes, QR codes or logos, for example.

The printing system can be integrated directly into an existing production or packaging line. This allows markings to be applied exactly where the packaging is manufactured, filled or prepared for shipping.

Especially when print data changes frequently, direct marking offers advantages over pre-printed packaging or individually prepared labels. The required information can be generated digitally and printed directly during the production process.

Direct marking instead of labels

In many production processes, the question arises as to whether information should be printed directly onto the product or applied using a label. Both methods have their place. For suitable applications, however, direct marking can help reduce additional materials and process steps.

With direct marking, for example, label rolls and the associated storage, procurement and disposal processes can be eliminated. At the same time, information can be applied directly to the product or packaging.

Especially for large production volumes or frequently changing data, industrial direct marking can therefore be an economically attractive alternative to labeling.

Direct marking for variable data

An important advantage of modern direct marking systems is their ability to process variable data. Not every product in a production batch necessarily needs to have the same marking.

Suitable printing systems can be used to output the following information variably:

  • Serial numbers
  • Batch numbers
  • Best-before dates
  • Production and manufacturing data
  • Sequential numbers
  • Barcodes
  • QR codes
  • Logos and individual texts

This makes direct marking particularly suitable for production processes in which traceability and individual product identification play an important role.
